 NBA 2024: Pistons' greatest error

After a lengthy pursuit by general manager Troy Weaver, the Detroit Pistons were able to ultimately deal Bojan Bogdanovic, a reliable wingman and scorer, during the trade deadline season.

As they began their retooling, the Pistons traded Bogey to the New York Knicks in exchange for a couple key players.

The Pistons gave Jaden Ivey more space to grow into a standout role, as he appears to be doing now, by cutting loose Killian Hayes. After obtaining Danilo Gallinari through a prior deal, the Pistons also reached a definitive decision on him.

By the time the dust settled, the Pistons had produced an incredible run of films that both cleared several obstacles and positioned them for future success. By selling Bogdanovic, Detroit achieved their goal of being younger, faster, and more focused on the future.

The NBA as a whole and Marcus Sasser, a 2023 second-round pick who has shown promise and needs plenty of minutes to establish his rhythm and place in the rotation, will benefit from Jaden Ivey's future success as well as the breakup in the backcourt caused by Hayes' release.

Rumors and fanfare surrounding the Pistons' trade negotiations for Bogey suggest they may have received more in exchange for the high-scoring forward.

Although they weren't even close to getting such a big payout in their most recent trade, the Pistons were rumored to be seeking for a first round pick plus players in any deal for Bogdanovic.

Alec Burks and Bogdanovic were traded for Evan Fournier, Ryan Arcidiacono, Quentin Grimes, and Malachi Flynn by Detroit.

The Pistons should provide him lots of chances to launch from a distance.

Grimes' strength is his ability to shoot the three ball from almost anyplace past halfcourt, and he usually does so quickly and abruptly, unlike Burks, who is more of a conventional spot-up shooter.

Kevin Knox, a player who is quite comparable to Burks in many aspects, was also dealt by the Pistons. Knox was waived by the Jazz already.

In order to get younger and more athletic and to give Weaver and the Pistons' young players more playing time, the flurry of trades was mostly focused on unloading Bogdanovic.

After months of rumors about Bogdanovic's allegedly enormous trade worth, Detroit had a successful trade deadline overall, but it's difficult not to feel a little let down.
